Google Responds To Privacy Concerns With Unsettlingly Specific Apology

From the lede:

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA—Responding to recent public outcries over its handling of private data, search giant Google offered a wide-ranging and eerily well-informed apology to its millions of users Monday.

“We would like to extend our deepest apologies to each and every one of you,” announced CEO Eric Schmidt, speaking from the company’s Googleplex headquarters. “Clearly there have been some privacy concerns as of late, and judging by some of the search terms we’ve seen, along with the tens of thousands of personal e-mail exchanges and Google Chat conversations we’ve carefully examined, it looks as though it might be a while before we regain your trust.”

Email Leads to Hate (And the Dark Side?)

alexbalk:

There needs to be a term to describe the condition where you keep an email unread in your box because you’re not prepared to deal with it yet, but then you start to hate and resent the person who sent it because it is the only unread email in your box and it sits there silently accusing you with its boldedness. Or maybe I am the only sufferer of said disease.

I suffer from this condition. Some email causes me to bleed hate, but I can’t express such emotional positions that are directed as much at the mail as the person in polite (or impolite) company. So instead certain email festers like a gangrenous intellectual limbs, despoiling the entire body of my Inbox. Which generates more hate.

It’s a circle. Not necessarily virtuous, but a circle.

You are under surveillance

An awesome piece. It’d be fabulous if someone *cough cough* printed a few hundred of these and started putting them up throughout the US in public spaces.

This is what ‘balancing’ security with civil liberties often looks like in practice.

This is possibly the most insane remote I’ve ever seen. God help the traditional television makers if Apple ever produces a real TV.

Google “Surveillance” Monster

Google “Surveillance” Monster

Of course, we do need to remember that surveillance in and of itself isn’t necessarily sinister: it’s when a surveillance practice’s coding mechanisms involve categories derived from stereotypical/prejudicial sources that we most need to worry.
